What is a death doula?

A “death doula” is someone who serves as a navigator, advocate, and experienced professional for the dying and their loved ones.

How can a doula help the dying?

Death Doula services range from pre-planning to education/support throughout the dying process, and after-death rituals and home celebrations.

Can a doula be there while someone is dying?

Yes, doulas are available to their client during the active dying phase, and a doula will make sure you have a solid back up plan in case they themselves are not available for whatever reason.

Can a doula work digitally?

Yes, a doula can work digitally or in person.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR A GOOD DEATH?

Plan ahead, stay informed, feel empowered to approach death in a way that feels authentic to you.

What other support does a dying person need?

A doula can help their clients connect with palliative and/or hospice support as well as any kind of funeral support they might need. Doulas also cater to the emotional and spiritual needs of the client and their loved ones.

Can a doula help with my funeral?

Of course! Doulas enjoy helping their clients put together funeral arrangements that are cost effective and meaningful.

What doesn’t a doula help with?

Doulas cannot offer clinical advice or sign any paperwork related to care or funeral arrangements. 

What happens after someone dies?

Your first call will be to hospice care, and then to the mortuary who will then come pick up the client.  The funeral home will be in touch with the family regarding next steps within 24 hours. Memorial services can take place any time after this.  

HOW CAN PEOPLE WITH DEMENTIA FIND CLOSURE IN THEIR LIFE?

People with dementia are confused, they didn’t stop feeling their emotions. Look them in the eye, tell them “I love you.” and mean it. Put your arms around them, gently rub their back, or simply hold hands. Continued shared love will help someone with dementia feel safe and supported during their transition. Not every day will be perfect, but love is always a powerful tool.

WHAT'S A GOOD WAY TO SAY GOODBYE TO SOMEONE WITH DEMENTIA?

Be informed about what the end-of-life process looks like for someone with dementia so you can advocate for their comfort.

WHAT IF MY DOCTOR DOESN’T AGREE WITH MY END-OF-LIFE DECISIONS?

We find one that will. You deserve to work with a doctor that understands and supports you. Working with the right doctor is key to a smooth end-of-life experience.

WHAT IF I DIE ALONE?

That’s ok! Trust yourself and your body, You might be surprised to hear that in the scope of a natural death people have some degree of choice about when they “let go.” I talk with my clients about trusting themselves and their own dying process, they know intuitively how and when to die.

CAN I SAY NO TO CANCER TREATMENT? I FEEL GUILTY IF I DON’T AT LEAST TRY.

Your body, your choice. You get to decide how you define your quality of life.

WHAT IF NOBODY WANTS MY ASHES?

I am happy to scatter them for you. I work with the proper authorities to make sure your ashes will be scattered legally, and with dignity. Meaning, no, you won’t get thrown in the garbage. If you’d like me to scatter your ashes be sure to mention this in your initial consultation so I can give you all of the appropriate details.

IS IT NORMAL FOR ME TO HAVE ANXIETY ABOUT DEATH?

It is common to have fears and anxiety’s regarding death. The good news is: you do not have to suffer from them forever and you can work through them. Together we can address the issues head on and work so you can enjoy every day more fully.
