Spring Journaling Workshop

Spring Journaling Workshop

Hosted by Wade Brill & Becca Wagoner

Join us to contemplate death, life, and seasonal transitions as we welcome the first new moon of spring.

Our community event is meant to bring folks together in a guided meditation and journaling session to consider the ways in which spring and death are interconnected, much like the seasons within ourselves. After holding space collectively to journal privately, we will discuss these themes as a group.

Please bring a journal and pen, and water to stay hydrated!

Suggested donation of $8 - $20 to cover the Death Doula LA community rental space.

Please note this is not a grief support group or a therapy group.

Nathalie Tierce, "Rites of Passage" Gallery Opening

Nathalie Tierce “Rites of Passage” Solo Show Studio DDLA

A native of New York City, Nathalie Tierce honed her craft at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY, and L'ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After finishing her studies, she spent a decade in Europe, refining her skills as a commercial artist before returning to the States. Tierce's collaborations span iconic names—Shell Silverstein, Andrew Lloyd Webber, The Rolling Stones—and contributions to major productions, including Martin Scorcese's Shutter Island, Tim Burton's Alice.

This body of work explores the idea of identity as a rite of passage. The repercussions of moving through the world as a searcher, consumer, fighter, or lover looking for a mate, as a hallmark of our existential experience in this life.

Diving into Tierce's paintings and drawings reveals an interplay of theater, film, and art. Her surreal fairy tales, shaped by borrowed tropes from myths and television, imbue characters with symbolism and depth taken from a woman's point of view.

In Tierce's process-based work, compositions and characters emerge organically from random paint, coffee, dirt, pastels, and ink marks. The evolution from spills and splatters to poignant expressions is a testament to her unique editing process, delving into the depths of texture and asking questions about her character's motivation and state of mind.

In the solace or chaos of solitary or multiple figures, Tierce captures the essence of universal emotions—fear, despair, frenzy, longing—wrapped in storybook attire with a raw, fever-dream edge. There is an uncomfortable beauty within her paintings and mixed media pieces, where humor dances with the absurd, navigating the intricacies of combative relationships with others and ourselves.

She's published three books, Fairy Tale Remnants, Pulling Weeds from a Cactus Garden and Chronicles of Fear, weaving her visual art seamlessly with prose. Her work has been compared to the great Edward Gorey by The Los Angeles Review of Books -Tierce participates in the Goreyesque tradition of destroying readers’ expectations for the work they have picked up — in this case, the picture book.

R.Crumb, the renowned American cartoonist, has called Nathalie - a genuine visionary artist with a direct line to her subconscious".

Spring Equinox Grief Release
Mar

Spring Equinox Grief Release

We tend to think of grief as something reserved for death and dying, but in truth grief is much deeper than that. So many of us carry the burden of withheld grief, whether it be anticipatory, delayed, masked, distorted, acute, collective or cumulative. This workshop was designed to harness the power of the spring equinox, the perfect time for reflection and shedding, to do a soul cleanse and release the pieces of our grief that are no longer serving us.

Kaitlyn has crafted a grief release tea blend featuring rosemary that will be shared at the beginning of the session. After a brief lecture on the healing + magical properties of rosemary, you will be gently guided through a meditation calling on its wisdom, followed by breathwork and yoga led by Hannah for a physical grief release practice.

**No previous experience with yoga, breath work or meditation is required.

hosted by:

Kaitlyn (she/her) is a queer Jewish death doula, visual artist + grief witch. She is passionate about tending to personal and communal grief, connecting with her ancestors, and serving the LGBTQIA+ community. She has a deep love for plant magic + Jewish mysticism. @thejewitchdoula

Hannah (she/her) is a National End of Life Doula Alliance (NEDA) certified death doula and yoga instructor. Her interest in death care is the result of being raised in a death-positive household, a desire to live a more examined life, and various experiences volunteering with those at the end of life.
